Growing Spiritually
At Msgr. Scanlan High School, we nurture not only academic growth but also the students' understanding of their inherent value as children of God. Our aim is to instill Christian values, social awareness, and kindle their individual spiritual journeys. Our Theology classes reinforce their faith through the study of God’s Revelation. Through Campus Ministry, we offer activities like retreats, Masses, prayer services, and Reconciliation opportunities for their spiritual enrichment.
We encourage students to actively engage in their faith both at home and in their communities. Participating in Sunday Mass at their parish and exploring ministries at their local centers is encouraged.

Christian Service: Making a Difference
Fulfilling our mission, Msgr. Scanlan provides diverse service opportunities that foster social awareness and tackle community and global challenges. Through these projects, students embody the teachings of Jesus, translating faith into action, and using their talents for the common good. As Jesus said, “When you did it for the least of these you did it for me” Matthew 25:40.
Each year, students are expected to complete a minimum 15 hours of service hours. A variety of service opportunities are available within the school. However, students are also informed about the many service opportunities that are available to them in their communities. With a range of projects, students can choose what aligns with their abilities and interests. New opportunities are added as they arise, and students receive email notifications about them. Students can also propose community service projects for approval as well.

Appropriate Projects: Approved community service encompasses various areas such as school, church, or neighborhood communities. Examples include tutoring in afterschool programs, sharing athletic skills with young children, aiding church events, volunteering at soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, or spending time with the elderly.
Non-Approved Activities: The Theology Department does not recognize hours worked in retail establishments, restaurants, or businesses as community service, even if unpaid. Other non-acceptable forms include babysitting, individual neighborly help, and personal household chores.
Students must submit their community service booklets to their Theology teacher each marking period so that hours can be reviewed and recorded into our FACTS system. Students who do NOT fulfill their community service requirements, will not be eligible to graduate until all hours have been satisfied.
Service participation earns students graduation cords. With 250 hours, they receive a Bronze cord; 1000 hours earn a silver cord, and exceeding 2000 hours earns a gold cord. At Msgr. Scanlan, we believe in nurturing not just minds, but hearts and hands for a brighter world.
